What Women Want and the Men who do not Care

According to an article reporting on a study conducted at Indiana University’s Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, men “find it difficult to tell the difference between women who are being friendly and women who are interested in [sex].”  In the study, male and female undergraduate students viewed pictures of women and ”had to categorize each as friendly, sexually interested, sad or rejecting.”

Apparently only pictures of women were used.  Why not pictures of men?  This suggests that one can tell from the way a woman looks whether she wants it or not.  While presumaby the study used facial expressions and other nonverbal body cues, this promotes the idea that a woman’s appearance–but not a man’s appearance–can be an invitation for sex.

Nevertheless, that is how the study was conducted.  The findings of the study and their interpretation are noteworthy, too.  While women tended to categorize the pictures correctly, men tended to interpret friendliness as sexual interest.  It would be easy here to stop and say that men have been trained to believe that all women want sex all the time.  But men tended to miscategorize all the pictures.  “When images of [women] meant to show allure flashed onto the screen, male students mistook the allure as amicable signals. ”  So men thought women wanted sex when women were just being friendly, and when women were interested in something sexual, men didn’t recognize that.

So, instead of men having been raised to believe that women are insatiable sex machines, it turns out that men really don’t care what women want.  Perhaps men have been raised to believe that what women want is irrelevant to them.  Their task is to go after what they want.  Something not stated in the article is whether the men and women were asked to rate their own attraction to the women in the pictures.  It would be interesting to know whether men were more likely to categorize the images of women that they found desirable as sexually interested.

Abusive fuckwads never go away

Lowry tried to contact me.  I thought he was going to leave me alone now, but he tried to contact me.  I semi-freaked out.  Do you know how often I see a car I think is his or become convinced that the person who commented on one of my blogs is really him in disguise?  I really hope he does not make any more attempts to contact me.

Phone interview

RCP called me today and conducted an unscheduled screening interview on the phone.  Wow, I knew I had a good feeling about this one.  Let’s just hope I didn’t mess up too badly on the phone today.

Beating the Jesus Nuts with a Wooden Spoon

Damn!  I forgot to eat a steak on Friday.

Since I’m on the subjects of food and religion, I just have to share this recipe.  A co-worker told me that this was received by email and was sent by somebody who was not sending it to be funny!  They really thought this was a great activity for parents and children:

 Resurrection Cookies

1 c whole pecans
1 t vinegar
3 egg whites
pinch salt
1 c sugar

Preheat oven to 300 degrees F. (this in important – don’t wait until you are
halfway done with the recipe!)  Place pecans in a zipper bag and let
children beat them with a wooden spoon to break into small pieces.  Explain
that after Jesus was arrested he was beaten by the Roman soldiers.

Read John 19:1-3

Let each child smell the vinegar.  Put 1 vinegar into mixing bowl. Explain
that when Jesus was thirsty on the cross he was given vinegar to drink.

Read John 19:28-30.

Add egg whites to vinegar.  Eggs represent life.  Explain that  Jesus gave
His life to give us life.

Read John 10:10-11.

Sprinkle a little salt into each child’s hand.  Let them taste it and brush
the rest into the bowl.  Explain that this represents the salty tears shed
by Jesus’ followers, and the bitterness of our own sin.

Read Luke 23:27.

So far the ingredients are not very appetizing.  Add 1 sugar. Explain that
the sweetest part of the story is that Jesus died because He loves us He
wants us to know and belong to Him.

Read Ps. 34:8 and John 3:16.

Beat with a mixer on high speed for 12 to 15 minutes until stiff peaks are
formed.  Explain that the color white represents the purity in God’s eyes of
those whose sins have been cleansed by Jesus.

Read Isa.1:18 and John 3:1-3

Fold in broken nuts.  Drop by teaspoons onto wax paper covered ookie sheet.
Explain that each mound represents the rocky tomb where Jesus’ body was
laid.

Read Matt. 27:57-60.

Put the cookie sheet in the oven, close the door and turn the oven OFF. Give
each child a piece of tape and seal the oven door.Explain that Jesus’ tomb
was sealed.

Read Matt. 27:65-66.

GO TO BED! Explain that they may feel sad to leave the cookies in the oven
overnight. Jesus’ followers were in despair when the tomb was sealed.

Read John 16:20 and 22.

On Easter morning, open the oven and give everyone a cookie. Notice the
cracked surface and take a bite. The cookies are hollow!  On the first
Easter Jesus’ followers were amazed to find the tomb open and empty.

Read Matt. 28:1-9.

HE HAS RISEN!

Job search continues

The job at DFE has been posted.  I am somewhat upset because my mentor did not email the job posting to me.  I saw it posted without her pointing me to it.  I’ve got to get my application together for that one.  I just can’t decide what to say in my cover letter.  I’m starting to have some bad feelings about this position.

Another job was posted.  This one I’ll call Rural Crossroads Place [RCP].  I’ve kind of got a good feeling about this one, even though the listed salary range is a little low.

I received my rejection letter from CMP.  I didn’t even get a phone interview.

Other women

Why haven’t we heard about any of the other prostituted women that Gov. Spitzer pay-for-raped?  He used that same service multiple times, right?

victimless crime?

Thanks to Feminism Online for linking to a New York Times Opinion piece about The Myth of the Victimless Crime by Melissa Farley and Victor Malarek.  They ask, WHAT do we know about the woman Gov. Eliot Spitzer allegedly hired as a prostitute?  I wonder why every mention I heard of this on mainstream tv and radio only mentioned the governor’s infidelity but overlooked the human rights issue.  Well, I don’t wonder because I know that misogyny is so common that most people don’t notice.  Throw in classism and some people probably believe that Kristen’s life is not worth as much as Eliot Spitzer’s life or the lives of his wife and children.  In fact, they don’t think anything about her worth because they don’t think of her at all.

Ain’t no sunshine for Number 9

Pay-for-rapist* New York Governor Spitzer is reported to have spent tens of thousands of dollars on a high-priced prostitution service.   But apparently for all that money he still couldn’t get a BBBJ

In the court papers, an Emperors Club employee was quoted as telling Kristen that Client 9 — Spitzer, according to investigators — “would ask you to do things that … you might not think were safe,” and Kristen responded by saying: “I have a way of dealing with that. … I’d be, like, listen, dude, you really want the sex?”

A law enforcement official said Tuesday the discussion had to do with Spitzer’s preference not to wear a condom and the call-girl’s insistence that he use one.  (READ THE ARTICLE HERE)

Why didn’t somebody tell him to look for Sunshine on Craig’s List or some similar service that advertises women men can pay to rape*?  You would have thought that in all his time as a prosecutor he would have learned a little more than that.

*Please don’t post a comment that says something like, “one man paying another man for the right to have sex with a woman that the first man enslaves is just free speech.  It’s my right.”
